  • Key Responsibilities:
    • This position is responsible for the grossing of surgical pathology specimens received at the IUHPL facility as well as frozen section coverage as needed. In addition, this position will assist with the education of both pathology residents and pathologists’ assistant students as it pertains to the grossing and handling of specimens for surgical pathology  

  • Selected candidate will spend -
    • 75% of time: Performs grossing of both routine and complex surgical pathology specimens to include confirmation of patient and specimen identifiers/specimen types. Confirms nature of surgical procedure(s) and renders gross descriptions to include weights and measures as appropriate. Substantiates clinical impressions based upon gross findings when possible. Samples tissues to adequately represent primary pathologic processes and is responsible for recognizing any additional pathologic entities to include necessary sampling and gross descriptions. Gross descriptions and sampling of cases involving malignant processes must meet staging requirements as set forth by AJCC/CAP guidelines and applicable departmental policies. Utilizes available staging templates where applicable and confers with staff and residents concerning unusual or particularly challenging gross findings. Often requires gross photographs for documentation and/or archiving of educational materials. Ensures proper triaging of special studies as appropriate.
    • 20% of time: Assists and educates both pathology residents and pathologists’ assistant students in gross surgical techniques.
    • 2% of time: Photographing of select specimens for both documentation and archiving of educational material. 
    • 2% of time: Participate in select research projects as approved by Medical Director
    • 1% of time: Performs other duties as assigned

Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, Indiana boasts a state-of-the-art 34 bed pediatric intensive care unit which provides care to critically ill infants, children, and adolescents from throughout the entire state. 

The 12-bed cardiac critical care unit and 24 bed cardiac stepdown unit and cardiology ward provide outstanding care to all variations of pediatric cardiovascular illness including approximately 400-500 cardiovascular surgery cases performed annually by four experienced and internationally-recognized cardiovascular surgeons.

 There are currently six pediatric cardiac critical care physicians that lead a multidisciplinary team consisting of pediatric cardiologists, neonatologists, dedicated nursing staff and pharmacist, nutritionist, nurse practitioners, and pediatric critical care, cardiology, and neonatology fellows.   

Candidates should have a strong commitment to clinical care, education, and research.  A successful candidate will have an appointment with the Indiana University School of Medicine and academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.    

*Minimum Requirements:

  • MD, BC/BE Pediatric Critical Care, with either post-ICU fellowship training in cardiac critical care or cardiology (e.g. one year cardiac ICU fellowship or cardiology fellowship) or at least three years as an attending physician caring for critically-ill pediatric cardiac patients
