The Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine and Riley Children’s Hospital is seeking a Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist to join a highly collaborative, team-based service providing inpatient consult-liaison psychiatric care to medically hospitalized children and adolescents.

This role is ideal for a psychiatrist who enjoys complex, medically integrated cases, values academic engagement and team-based care, and seeks an intellectually rewarding position with manageable volume and strong institutional support.

Typical patient presentations include:
•    Psychiatric evaluation following suicide attempt or significant self-injury
•    Psychiatric care requiring inpatient medical monitoring (IV meds, G-tubes, wound care)
•    Eating disorders requiring medical stabilization
•    Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FNSD) impacting safe discharge
•    Trauma-related behavioral dysregulation or TBI-associated symptoms
•    Chronic pain syndromes (e.g., CRPS) with functional impairment
•    Medical nonadherence requiring inpatient intervention
•    CNS-involved medical conditions contributing to psychiatric symptoms (e.g., autoimmune encephalitis)

Avg patient volume is approximately 2–4 patients/day

Key Responsibilities
•    Provide C-L psychiatric care to medically hospitalized pediatric patients
•    Collaborate closely with hospitalists, subspecialists, nursing, social work, psychology, and case mgt
•    Supervise and teach medical students, residents, and fellows as part of the IUSoM academic mission
•    Contribute to committees, program development, and improvement initiatives
•    Engage in scholarly activity as desired (research not required, but opportunities available)

Schedule & Call
•    Current schedule: M-F, approximately 8:30a – 4:30p
•    Future opportunity: Potential transition to a 7-on / 7-off model that would include inpatient unit rounding on weekends
•    Call: Low commitment (approximately 2 weekends every 6 months)
•    Nighttime and overflow coverage supported by a designated team, supporting predictable end-of-day departures

Ideal Candidate Profile
•    MD or DO (or foreign equivalent)
•    BC/BE in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry
•    Comfortable with in person, bedside psychiatric care in medically complex patients

Key Responsibilities

  • The primary responsibility of the Psychologist is to provide psychological evaluations for bariatric surgery candidates.  These evaluations include a diagnostic clinical interview as well as psychological assessment.  
  • The Psychologist also provides direction and support to patients throughout the various stages of the program as needed, from initial evaluation to long-term follow-up, often by offering individual therapy and support groups.

Qualifications

  • Experience and/or training in presurgical evaluations, bariatrics, pediatrics/adolescents, and research are preferred.
  • The ideal candidate should possess a strong foundation in clinical psychology, with experience in behavioral medicine and weight-related health conditions.
  • Candidate should be skilled in evidence-based interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapies, and psychoeducation, which are effective in addressing the psychological distress often associated with obesity, including depression and anxiety. A deep understanding of the biopsychosocial model of obesity is essential, recognizing that weight is influenced by complex genetic, physiological, emotional, and environmental factors.
  • Candidate should be adept at conducting thorough psychodiagnostics assessments to identify underlying mental health conditions that may impact treatment adherence or outcomes.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary settings—such as bariatric surgery teams or chronic disease management programs—would be highly valuable.
  • The ideal candidate must demonstrate empathy, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to reducing stigma, helping patients shift from a weight or shape-focused mindset to improvement in overall health and quality of life.

Job Duties 

  • Perform advanced imaging procedures under the direction of a supervising radiologist, including:
    • Gastrointestinal fluoroscopic procedures (UGI, SBFT, esophagrams, contrast enemas, feeding tube placements/checks)
    • Thoracentesis
    • Paracentesis
    • Joint injections and aspirations
    • Lumbar punctures 
    • Image-guided biopsies (as credentialed)
  • Obtain comprehensive patient histories and perform focused physical assessments relevant to the planned procedure.
  • Prepare patients for procedures, explain processes, and ensure informed consent is completed appropriately.
  • Assist radiologists with workflow optimization, protocol adherence, and clinical decision support.
  • Interpret preliminary imaging findings and communicate observations to supervising radiologists.
  • Document procedures, patient interactions, and clinical impressions in the electronic medical record. 
  • Promote patient safety by following all IU Health policies, radiation safety standards, and infection-control practices.
  • Collaborate with technologists, nurses and other clinical staff to ensure efficient, patient-centered care. 
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and departmental meetings. 

Qualifications

  • Completion of accredited Registered Radiologist Assistant (RRA) or Radiology Practitioner Assistant (RPA) program. 
  • Current AART certification with RRA credential 
  • Current Indiana licensure or eligibility for licensure
  • Demonstrated competency in fluoroscopic and interventional procedures 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment
